The Impact of the Economic Downturn in the Spanish Civil Justice System

    Get PDF
The Spanish justice system has been shaken by the econom- ic downturn as many other institutions have. This article addresses in the first place some statistical data that shed light as regards to the number of judges and the costs and length of the procedure in Spain. These figures help to understand, in the second place, the impact of austerity measures on the judiciary, namely, the freeze on the hiring of judges and the establishing of high court fees. While they mainly concern the supply side of justice services, others such cost reductions in legal aid have had, in the third place, an impact on the demand side, driving many citizens to social exclusion and to resorting to self-defence mecha-nisms. The final part of this article addresses some remedies that may alleviate judiciary’s workload, but that fall short of doing it. All in all, the Spanish justice system seems to require a holistic approach to patch up edges, but one in which the role of judge-made justice in a democratic society has to be central again

    INTEGRAL timing and localization performance

In this letter we report on the accuracy of the attitude, misalignment, orbit and time correlation which are used to perform scientific analyses of the INTEGRAL data. The boresight attitude during science pointings has an accuracy of 3 arcsec. At the center of the field, the misalignments have been calibrated leading to a location accuracy of 4 to 40 arcsec for the different instruments. The spacecraft position is known within 10 meters. The relative timing between instruments could be reconstructed within 10 microsec and the absolute timing within 40 microsec.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in A+A letters, INTEGRAL special issu

An efficient hardware architecture for a neural network activation function generator

    Get PDF
This paper proposes an efficient hardware architecture for a function generator suitable for an artificial neural network (ANN). A spline-based approximation function is designed that provides a good trade-off between accuracy and silicon area, whilst also being inherently scalable and adaptable for numerous activation functions. This has been achieved by using a minimax polynomial and through optimal placement of the approximating polynomials based on the results of a genetic algorithm. The approximation error of the proposed method compares favourably to all related research in this field. Efficient hardware multiplication circuitry is used in the implementation, which reduces the area overhead and increases the throughput

Engaging Isatins in Multicomponent Reactions (MCRs) – Easy Access to Structural Diversity

    Get PDF
Multicomponent reactions (MCRs) are a valuable tool in diversity-oriented synthesis. Its application to privileged structures is gaining relevance in the fields of organic and medicinal chemistry. Isatin, due to its unique reactivity, can undergo different MCRs, affording multiple interesting scaffolds, namely oxindole-derivatives (including spirooxindoles, bis-oxindoles and 3,3-disubstituted oxindoles) and even, under certain conditions, ring-opening reactions occur that leads to other heterocyclic compounds. Over the past few years, new methodologies have been described for the application of this important and easily available starting material in MCRs. In this review, we explore these novelties, displaying them according to the structure of the final products obtained

New Halogenated Phenylbacteriochlorins and Their Efficiency in Singlet-Oxygen Sensitization

    Get PDF
Halogenated phenylbacteriochlorins are synthesized with high yields in a two-step procedure. They have strong absorbances in the red and are very stable to air and light at room temperature. Flash photolysis measurements show that the triplet states of these bacteriochlorins have 30 μs lifetimes in deaerated toluene, that are quenched with diffusion-controlled rate constants by molecular oxygen. Time-resolved photoacoustic measurements, with nanosecond and nanocalorie resolution, show that these bacteriochlorins sensitize the formation of singlet oxygen with nearly unity quantum yield. However, singlet-oxygen phosphorescence measurements indicate that physical quenching occurs before the singlet-oxygen molecules diffuse into solution, and nearly half of the sensitized singlet states are lost

    Photochemistry and photophysics of thienocarbazoles

Two methylated thienocarbazoles and two of their synthetic nitro-precursors have been examined by absorption, luminescence, laser flash photolysis and photoacoustic techniques. Their spectroscopic and photophysical characterization involves fluorescence spectra, fluorescence quantum yields and lifetimes, and phosphorescence spectra and phosphorescence lifetimes for all the compounds. Triplet-singlet difference absorption spectra, triplet molar absorption coefficients, triplet lifetimes, intersystem crossing S-1 similar tosimilar to--> T-1 and singlet molecular oxygen yields were obtained for the thienocarbazoles. In the case of the thienocarbazoles it was found that the lowest-lying singlet and triplet excited states, S, and T-1, are of pi,pi* origin, whereas for their precursors S-1 is n,pi*, and T-1 is pi,pi*. In both thienocarbazoles it appears that the thianaphthene ring dictates the S, T, yield, albeit there is less predominance of that ring in the triplet state of the linear thienocarbazole, which leads to a decrease in the observed Phi(T) value.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Surface functionalization superparamagnetic nanoparticles conjugated with thermoresponsive poly(epsilon-lysine) dendrons tethered with carboxybetaine for the mild hyperthermia-controlled delivery of VEGF

AbstractVascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is the growth factor responsible for the triggering of angiogenesis, the process of blood vessel formation supporting the long-term viability of any repaired or regenerated tissue. As the growth factor is effective only when concentration gradients are generated, new shuttles need to be developed that ensure both the control of gradients at the site of tissue repair and the release of VEGF at physiological levels. Magnetic hyperthermia is the production of heat induced by magnetic materials through their exposure to an external oscillating magnetic field. In this paper, magnetic nanoparticles capable of generating controllable hyperthermia were functionalised with hyperbranched poly(epsilon-lysine) peptides integrating in their core parallel thermoresponsive elastin-like peptide sequences and presenting an uppermost branching generation tethered by the zwitterionic amino acid carboxybetaine. The results show that these functionalised magnetic nanoparticles avidly bind VEGF and release it only upon generation of mild-hyperthermic pulses generated by oscillating magnetic filed. The VEGF release occurred in a temperature range at which the elastin-like peptides collapse. It is proposed that, through the application of an external magnetic field, these magnetic carriers could generated gradients of VEGF in vivo and allow its tuned delivery in a number of clinical applications.Statement of SignificanceThe present paper for the first time reveals the possibility to control the delivery of VEGF through mild hyperthermia stimuli generated by a oscillating magnetic field. To this purpose, magnetic nanoparticles of high size homogeneity and coated with a thin coating of poly(acrylic acid) were functionalised with a novel class of poly(epsilon lysine) dendrimers integrating in their structure a thermoresponsive amino acid sequence mimicking elastin and exposing at high density a zwitterionic modified amino acid, the carboxybetaine, known to be able to bind macromolecules. Physicochemical and biochemical characterisation elegantly show the link between the thermal properties of the nanoparticles and of the dendrimer change of conformation and how this enable the release of VEGF at temperature values compatible with the growth factor stability
